Located just a few hundred kilometers from Nagasaki, Fukue Island stands as the largest and most populous island in the Goto archipelago. But it’s not just a picturesque destination; it’s a treasure rich in history and culture.

Nagasaki was a bustling trading center, serving as Japan’s gateway to the world. This vibrant exchange of cultures and ideas, however, faced a challenge during the Edo era with the emergence of anti-Christian sentiment. Despite Christianity initially being embraced, the Shogunate took a hard stance in the early 1600s, implementing a ban and harsh penalties for non-compliance.

In response, many Christians sought refuge on remote islands like Fukue, where the risk of being caught was almost non-existent. It was a challenging period, lasting over two centuries until the late 19th century when the ban was lifted. Yet, even after its repeal, some chose to practice their faith discreetly.

During these tumultous times, churches were built in idyllic seaside locations, which now serve as tangible reminders of the resilience and faith of those who sought refuge on the island during times of persecution.

Fukue Island boasts stunning natural landscapes, from lush forests to picturesque coastal views. The vibrant green of its forests and the vivid blue of the surrounding ocean create a captivating contrast.

Despite its compact size, Fukue Island offers a stunning variety of natural scenery. From lush rice fields to tropical jungles, from cliffs overlooking the deep blue ocean to paradisiac emerald-green sand beaches.

The northern part exudes a wild and tropical charm. As you traverse road 162, passing by landmarks like Dozaki Church and Togis Port’s red bridge, you’ll come across quaint seaside entries that transform into enchanting views during sunset. Continuing along the road for about 2 kilometers, take a right turn onto a smaller road leading to Hantomariura Bay.

Here, you’ll delve into the island’s lushest and most jungle-like terrain, immersing yourself in a truly natural experience.

After returning to road 162, follow road 384 until you reach Takahama Beach. Park your motorbike and unwind on what is arguably one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in the entire nation.

From there, continue south towards the Osezaki Lighthouse observation point. The coastal roads and the panoramic views from the top of the observatory are captivating.

Next, head north towards Shimayama Island, which is connected to the main island by a bridge spanning over Koura Beach. The beach’s stunning emerald-green is just worth the whole journey.

Before returning to the main town and concluding the whole island tour, consider taking road 384 eastward, which transitions into road 49. Brace yourself for a sight straight out of a fairy tale: Onidake, a grass-covered mountain housing a dormant volcano near the airport. For some, its picturesque beauty might evoke memories of an iconic desktop wallpaper.

Fukue Island is not just a paradise for nature lovers; it’s also a haven for foodies, especially those with a passion for meat and fish. When it comes to fish, Fukue Island serves up some of the freshest sashimi I’ve ever had. If you get the chance, I highly recommend visiting a charming little restaurant run by a lovely elderly couple. They’ve been mastering the art of sabaku (fish cutting) for decades, ensuring each bite is a true delight.
